Community Independent Phil Scott launches Nightcliff by-election campaign
Community independent candidate Phil Scott will officially launch his campaign for the Nightcliff
by-election at 6:00pm, Tuesday 17 February at the Greenhouse Café, Nightcliff.
Mr Scott, ran as a community independent candidate in the federal electorate of Solomon at the
last election, achieving a historic vote for an independent and helped build a strong grassroots
campaign focused on integrity, fairness and community-led decision-making.
Now standing for his home seat of Nightcliff, Mr Scott says the by-election is an opportunity for
voters to choose a representative who answers directly to the community, not to party rooms.
“Nightcliff deserves a strong, independent voice that puts people before party politics,” Mr Scott
said.
Mr Scott has worked across community services and development for much of his career,
leading teams and projects in mental health and social services. He is also an active volunteer in
local community sport.
He lives with his family in his family home in the electorate. “This is my neighbourhood. My kids
go to school here. We play sport here,” he said. “I’m running because our community deserves
representation that listens, shows it’s working, and is accountable to the people who live here.”
Mr Scott said his involvement in community listening activities had highlighted a strong desire for
transparent, accountable leadership and practical solutions to local issues.
As a community independent, Mr Scott said he would not be beholden to any political party.
“Territorians have high standards for public office. We expect transparency, proper scrutiny and
leaders who listen to the community,” he said. “That’s not radical — it’s basic good government.”
His campaign is centred on three priorities: looking after place, building a fair and local economy,
and strengthening safe, caring communities.
“This by-election is a chance to choose practical solutions, local accountability and leadership
that brings people together,” Mr Scott said.
Mr Scott said he intended to run a strong and competitive campaign. “I’m not running to shout
from the sidelines,” he said. “I’m running to build something better — cleaner politics, safer
communities and a government that actually listens.”
